Pipe Compost Units For Biodegradable Waste Management Trivandrum Area

As per a verdict that has been published the government has granted permission to the cooperation of Trivandrum to equip one lakh homes with pipe compost units. Including kudumbashree units any organization and agencies can be a part of this and their main chore will be to install these pipe compost units. The pipe compost plants costing around Rs 813 would be installed at 75% subsidy costing only around Rs 200 for the customer.

How Pipe Composting Works

A pvc pipe measuring 200mm in width and one meter long will be installed together with a stove made of ferrocement . The equipment is to be dug one foot deep inside the mud, filled with cow dung and the biodegradable waste. The total cost of Rs 813 mentioned before includes the procedures as well as the equipment.

An approximate of 2kg of waste is generated per day for a family including 5 members. This waste can be disposed into the pipes dug in mud and covered with the stove made of ferrocement .Within 25 days this pipe will be filled and accordingly the waste can then be disposed into the second pipe till that too is filled within 25 days and by then the waste in the first pipe would have turned to manure and this can be used for the vegetable farming or flower farming done at homes.

One Lakh Homes to Be Equipped With Pipe Compost Units

Vegetable terrace farming is now popular with grow bags and together with the manure produced via pipe composts ,the daily required vegetables can be grown at home itself. All biodegradable wastes can be disposed of in the pipe compost. Plastics and metals are to be avoided. The cooperation will be running this with the help of “suchitwa mission”. Government has come up with this new method of disposing waste at its origin due to the waste disposal crisis that has sprung up in the city. The pipe compost unit can successfully be installed in all houses having at least 2 feet of mud around.
